HOLLYWOOD (KRON) — The case of the stolen $150,000 pearl-studded Academy Awards gown worn by Lupita Nyong’o has been solved.
And, it appears the dress, a white Francisco Costa Calvin Klein, isn’t worth $150,000, according to the alleged thief.
Entertainment gossip website TMZ is reporting that a man called them to say he stole the dress after entering Nyong’o’s hotel room at the The London hotel in West Hollywood. The thief claims the door was left open, the site said.
The man told TMZ that he and others removed two of the gown’s 6,000 pearls and apparently had them appraised in Los Angeles’ garment district.
“The thief told us he returned the bag and called us because he wanted the world to know ‘Hollywood’s fake bulls**t,'” the site said.
The alleged thief decided to return the dress back to the hotel inside a black trash bag that he stowed under a bathroom sink on 2nd floor.
The dress was retrieved and is now with by L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, TMZ said.
