PALO ALTO (KRON) — Palo Alto Police are investigating nine vehicle break-ins that happened Tuesday evening.
All of the break-ins happened between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., with most happening in one area.
Three of the break-ins were on the upper floor of the City Parking Garage R in the 500 block of High St.
Four others happened in the downtown area.
The thieves broke into cars parked on Webster Street, Hamilton Avenue, University Avenue and Lytton Avenue.
Two others happened on the El Camino Real.
All of the car doors were locked, but the burglars smashed windows to steal backpacks and bags left in plain view.
Laptops and tablets were taken in eight out of the nine break-ins.
In an interesting twist, seven of the nine cars targeted were rental cars.
In 2015, there have been 65 auto burglaries in Palo Alto.
