Vallejo Fire Department Notices Trend with Recent Fires

VALLEJO (KRON) — The Vallejo Fire Department says that the city has an ongoing and consistent issue with homeless people squatting in abandoned buildings.

In the recent past, Vallejo Fire has responded to three separate fires at the Mare Island Naval Base, and two more at the abandoned school district building in the city.

Captain Sean Googins doesn’t believe that there is a direct connection between the two fire locations, but instead is part of a larger problem with homeless people trying to stay warm.

Googins said these fires may have been started by homeless who were squatting in the abandoned buildings.

The buildings don’t have utilities hooked up, leaving squatters trying unconventional ways to stay warm.

Googins says these living conditions promote more of a fire danger.
