SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis is planning to announce his retirement Tuesday, ESPN is reporting, citing sources.
Yahoo! Sports first reported Willis’ decision to retire early Monday morning.
Willis, 30, has played his entire eight-year career with the 49ers.
The seven-time Pro Bowler appeared in only six games last season after suffering a toe injury.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio is also reporting that 14-year-veteran Justin Smith will also retire in this off season, multiple league sources. The 35-year-old defensive lineman is entering his final year of a three, $17.1 million deal he signed in June of 2013.
“Out of respect to Justin, I’ve told him, I will not try to talk him into anything,” 49ers coach Jim Tomsula said recently at the NFL Scouting Combine. “And I will not try to talk him out of anything. He has earned the right to make his decision on his terms. We said that for the last three or four years.”
