NEWARD (KRON) — Two people and a dog were rescued from the balcony of a Newark house that caught fire Wednesday morning.
Fire officials with Alameda County were called at 6:42 a.m. about a fire in the 5200 block of Ervin Court.
Less than 20 minutes later, fire officials had the fire extinguished.
Two people were in the house at the time of the fire.
Heavy smoke kept the duo from being able to get out of the house through the door.
The smoke traveled up through their stairway and they felt like
they were being driven to their balcony,” Battalion Chief Robert Petersen said.
Fire officials used a ladder to rescue them from the second floor balcony.
They weren’t injured in the fire.
In total, six people. a dog and a lizard were displaced by the fire.
The cause of this fire is still under investigation, but it appeared to start in an unoccupied lower bedroom where a construction light was plugged in, according to Petersen.
He said the fire appears to have caused about $50,000 in damage to the house.
