Police arrest man with counterfeit bills in Vacaville

VACAVILLE (BCN) –Police arrested a man after he allegedly used counterfeit bills to pay for a hotel room in Vacaville Friday night, a police sergeant said.

Police received a call around 9:45 p.m. from a hotel clerk who told police a man came in with two $100 bills that had the same serial number, Vacaville police Sgt. Charlie Spruill said.

Spruill said the hotel is located at 1050 Orange Drive, which is the location of Quality Inn & Suites, according to the company’s website.

The clerk completed the transaction and told police where the man was staying, Spruill said.

Officers went to the man’s hotel room and asked him about the bills, Spruill said. The man reportedly denied knowing the bills were fakes.

Officers asked the man, later identified as 43-year-old Vacaville resident Rod Ireland, if he had anything else illegal in the room. Ireland reportedly told officers he did not, Spruill said.

The officers asked to search the room and Spruill said the officers subsequently found Ireland was in possession of methamphetamine and hash, or concentrated cannabis.

Police arrested Ireland on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and hash, forgery and burglary.

Spruill said Ireland is suspected of burglary because he “knowingly entered a business for the purpose of committing a crime,” with the crime being using counterfeit bills to pay for a service.
