HAYWARD (KRON) — A collision at a busy East Bay intersection is expected to impact the evening commute Friday and officials are asking motorists to consider alternate routes.
At about 1 a.m., CHP officers tried to pull the 2004 Mazda over on Tennyson Road east of Interstate Highway 880 because the car had false registration tags and the driver threw a lit cigarette out the window, CHP
Officer Charles Lee said.
The driver sped away, but crashed into an electric pole near Hesperian Boulevard and Southland Drive. The driver fled on foot but left his passengers, a woman and an infant child, behind. They suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital, Lee said.
The driver has not been apprehended as of 3:30 p.m.
The area surrounding Hesperian Boulevard and Southland Drive will cause traffic backups and detours until about 6 p.m., the Hayward Police Department said.
In related traffic news, the westbound lanes of Richmond-San Rafael Bridge where a United Parcel Service big-rig crashed this morning will remain closed until about 5-6 p.m.
