Cherry blossom festival underway

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Festivities began in Japantown this weekend to kick off the week long cherry blossom festival celebrations.  Hundreds gathered to celebrate the annual event which included song, dance and activities.

This week’s activities include Japantown’s new exhibit, ‘The Art of Resilience.’

“This exhibition is basically a way for us to illustrate and also show and share and celebrate with everyone else the preciousness of Japantown. So that other people can treasure this. This is a historical neighborhood that has been here for so long”, says artist Eryn Kimura.

Miniyonku Club

Miniyonku_Sakura_PromoRace cars are coming to the festival! Okay, they’re actually a Japanese brand of model cars called Miniyonku – aka ‘Four Wheel Drive’. These fun-sized 1/32 scale race cars can go at speeds up to 10,000mph! The Miniyonku Club assembles and then mods these cars for racing on similarly scaled tracks. The club is making its first appearance at the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, and will be hosting an open event/tournament on April 11, 12, and 18 from 10am-3:30pm.
