Oakland man gets 82 years in prison for murder of church handyman

OAKLAND (KRON) — A man was sentenced to 82 years to life in prison for killing his friend near San Antonio Park in East Oakland.

Steve Buggs, a 39-year-old truck driver was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting 34-year-old Lester Young inside Young’s home on September 21st, 2012.

Buggs sentence was increased by 32 years due to prior convictions for attempted murder and possession of a gun as a felon.

Buggs shot his friend multiples times, according to police.  Young worked as a church handyman and was close with Buggs.  Police believe the incident may have resulted from a dispute over a woman.

Buggs’ attorney Mark McGoldrick had told jurors that he should be acquitted because witnesses misidentified Buggs as the killer.

Young’s mother, Deborah Young, said today that she doesn’t understand why Buggs killed her son.

Young said she’s upset that she’ll never be able to wish her son “Happy birthday” or “Merry Christmas” anymore but because of her religion she’s decided to forgive Buggs.
