PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) – California Lottery officials have concluded that a Palmdale gas station attendant who paid an undercover officer $75 for a lottery ticket worth $75,000 made a mistake and wasn’t trying to cheat anybody.

The officer was conducting a random compliance check for the state lottery when he arrived at a Chevron gas station in Palmdale on March 25 to cash in a ticket.

Although the winner’s receipt said the ducat was worth $75,000, the officer was given only $75.

Lottery officials said Thursday the clerk didn’t follow proper state-mandated procedures for cashing the ticket. But they added there was no evidence that was deliberate.

Officials also noted that when the station’s manager discovered the error she checked surveillance video and tried to find the ticket holder.
