Picasso set to sell for $140 million at auction

NEW YORK (AP) — Two works — a painting by Pablo Picasso and a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti — are poised to make art auction history.

Picasso’s “Women of Algiers (Version O)” could sell for over $140 million on Monday at Christie’s New York. That would make it the most expensive work of art at auction. The vibrantly colored painting features a scantily attired female amid smaller nudes.

Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” currently holds that position. It sold for $142.4 million in 2013.

Giacometti’s life-size sculpture, “Pointing Man,” could fetch $130 million. That could earn it the title of most expensive sculpture at auction.

Both works are among two dozen masterpieces from the 20th century Christie’s is offering in a curated sale titled “Looking Forward to the Past.”
