OAKLAND (KRON) — The controversial issue of children’s vaccines and whether they should be mandated by law sparked a protest in Oakland on Wednesday.
The protesters chanted “Parents should call the shots,” as parents and others marched in front of the state building in Oakland Wednesday morning, as Senate Bill 277 continues to progress through the state legislature.
Originally, the bill called for banning children from traditional schools if they were not vaccinated. That caused several legislators to vote it down.
Authors of the bill are now considering a clause that would allow students to be “grand-fathered” in, if they are already enrolled in school.
If the bill passes, California would join two other states that require all children be fully vaccinated to go to school.
The bill is scheduled to go before lawmakers again on Thursday.
