BERKELEY (KRON) — Some harsh and hateful words have cost a local high school athlete a college scholarship.
A star baseball player from Pinole High School was caught on video yelling a racist rant and then telling players of the opposing team to “go back to Africa.”
KRON 4 is choosing not to release the teen’s name since he is underage.
Pete Imperial, principal at St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley, says he has spoken to the young men from both schools and that the Pinole Valley player feels remorse about the remarks. Pinole was playing St. Mary’s when the student yelled out the racist rant.
The student had a scholarship to play baseball at California State University, Northridge. He has since lost that scholarship after the video went viral.
KRON 4 tried to talk to the Contra Costa County School District but they would not say what kind of discipline was taken against the student.
According to statistics, the student missed five games following the incident but did play in Tuesday night’s game.
