Horse dies after falling down embankment in Briones Regional Park

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (KRON) — A horse that got stuck in a tree after falling 30 feet down an embankment in Briones Regional Park Tuesday afternoon has died.

According to East Bay Regional Park District spokesperson Carolyn Jones, a woman was riding the horse on the eastern side of the park, on lower Spenger Trail just south of Blue Oak Trail when the horse fell down the embankment.

The rider wasn’t hurt in the fall, but the horse got stuck in a tree. Crews were able to get the horse down around 5 p.m., four and a half hours after the fall happened.

Rescue crews posted these pictures on the East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department Facebook page showing the horse had been brought to the ground.

The fire department later posted that the horse had died from its injuries.

Authorities say they don’t know what caused the horse to fall.
