SAN JOSE (KRON) — The man accused of abducting a 3-year-old child from a Milpitas library was arraigned on Tuesday.
23-year-old Alphonso David Edington was shackled at the waist as he entered the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice.
The Pittsburg man is accused of abducting a 3-year-old boy last Friday morning from the children’s section of the North Main Street Library in Milpitas. The toddler was recovered unharmed.
Edington was arrested by police, thanks in part to a VTA driver who spotted the pain on his Fremont-bound bus.
A one-time resident of Pittsburg, court records show that Edington was arrested in February and charged with assault. He’s accused of punching a man on the street in Los Gatos.
Prosecutors say they have yet to determine whether that case is relevant, whether Edington planned to allegedly snatch the child, or whether is was an alleged crime of opportunity.
Other than to exchange a few words with his attorney, Edington showed no emotion during his brief appearance in court.
