OAKLAND (BCN) — A man who was shot in the area of 39th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Oakland on Thursday evening is in grave condition at a local hospital today, police said.
A police chase around 6:30 p.m. following the shooting wound up on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 near the Grand Avenue exit and initially caused two eastbound lanes to be closed, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.
Wilkenfeld said CHP officers started pursuing a car from city streets onto Highway 580 and the car stopped in the center divide of the highway near Grand Avenue.
Officers immediately noticed a man suffering from a gunshot wound and started rendering first aid before he was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.
Before the police chase ended in the eastbound lanes, Wilkenfeld said an earlier, unrelated car crashed on westbound I-580 near the Grand Avenue exit that forced two westbound lanes to be closed for some time.
