BART could re-open restrooms at underground stations closed after Sept. 11 attacks

OAKLAND (KRON) — BART could be getting closer to re-opening shuttered restrooms at its underground stations.

The BART board of directors is also considering redesigning the restrooms to improve safety. After the Sept. 11th attacks in 2001, BART closed the bathrooms at all of its stations as a security precaution.

Since then, bathrooms at above ground stations have been re-opened but restrooms below ground, like at the Embarcadero station in San Francisco, remain closed. In recent years, there has been growing pressure to re-open these remaining facilities.

There’s currently no timeline for when or even if the remaining bathrooms will be re-opened, but the BART board is considering a possible pilot program at the Powell Street Station.
