Kids see dad shot to death in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 48-year-old man is being held on a murder charge after a shooting in Southeast Portland early Saturday night that happened in front of his children.

Jon Landis was arrested after the shooting around 7:15 p.m. in the 2600 block of SE 151st, officials said. When police arrived they found Dean Kuntz shot. Kuntz, 57, died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, the medical examiner said.

Kuntz’s family said the shooting happened on this quiet street after Kuntz got into a disagreement with his neighbor.

“For somebody to come on somebody’s doorstep and take their life over an altercation like this is just senseless, tragic,” said son Tabor Kuntz.

He and his sister Miranda were in the yard at the time of the shooting. They said they don’t know why Landis came to the house, but when they heard arguing they went outside.

Moments later, they said, Kuntz asked Landis to leave the property. He started to leave but then turned around and shot Kuntz in the chest, they said.

Tabor said he ran to his father and began CPR, but it was too late.

Police said what they were arguing about remains unclear.

Dean Kuntz was well-loved and respected by his family.

“His sons and daughters, he has two grandkids, he’s leaving a wife behind, he has two brothers, two sisters,” Tabor Kuntz said. “We’re all pulling together in this tragic time. With faith in God, we can get through anything and we will. I know our dad is looking down on us, telling us to be strong and we will be.”

Landis will be arraigned Monday.
