Martins Beach re-opens for the summer

HALF MOON BAY (KRON) — Public access appears to have trumped private property rights in the long-running battle at Martin’s Beach, on the San Mateo County coast–at least for now.

Closed for much of the past four years, the gate to the beach, just south of Half Moon Bay, has been re-opened in response to a lawsuit against the owner, South Bay venture capitalist Vinod Khosla.

Khosla bought the 89-acre property in 2008 and had plans to develop it, which led to still on-going legal challenges brought by the Surfrider Foundation, Coastal Commission and other groups.

Surfers and other visitors say the open gate is a victory for the local community.
