SONOMA COUNTY — A dive team has recovered the body of a 14-year-old boy who fell off a raft and disappeared in the water of Lake Sonoma on Fourth of July.
Marquette Gross, of Vistacion Valley, went missing at around 4 p.m. on Saturday after his raft overturned at a part of the lake that is up 200 feet deep. Gross, who was not wearing a life jacket, did not know how to swim, according to family members.
Gross’ family told KRON that the teen’s body was found on Monday afternoon.
Witnesses say that Gross and another boy were being towed on their raft behind a boat near the private marina. At some point while being towed, both boys were ejected from the tube and went into the water. One of the boys was able to swim to safety while the other went under the water and did not surface.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office dive team and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office dive team responded Saturday to search for the missing boy. Search teams used a helicopter and sonar boat during their search but could not find the boy.
The teen’s family has held vigil at the scene. They told KRON that they hoped authorities would find Marquette’s body so they can bring him home.
