San Francisco (KRON) — The murder of Kathryn Steinle on Pier 14 in San Francisco last week is now in the spotlight of the Presidential race.

Following last week’s tragedy on The Embarcadero, GOP candidate Donald Trump is on the stump to call for tougher immigration laws and building a wall on the southern U.S. border.

45-year-old Francisco Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, has been arrested for the shooting death of Steinle. The 32-year-old San Francisco woman was walking along the dock at Pier 14 around 6:30 p.m. last Wednesday with her dad and a family friend when she was gunned down in broad daylight in front of numerous witnesses.

Last Friday, the business mogul took to Twitter to launch an attack on U.S. immigration policies after Homeland Security announced that Sanchez was previously deported five times, most recently in 2009. Sanchez also had seven prior felony convictions for drugs, investigators said.

“Our Southern border is totally out of control. This is an absolutely disgraceful. situation,” Trump blasted on Twitter. “… We need border security!”

Homeland Security says they had Sanchez in custody four months ago and was ready to deport him, ‪but the San Francisco Police Department said they wanted him first on outstanding drug charges.

Police had Sanchez in custody prior to the shooting but released him saying they determined Sanchez had no warrants and had completed his federal time.

San Francisco policy on illegal immigrants states that a law enforcement official shall not detain an individual on the basis of a civil immigration detainer after that individual becomes eligible for release from custody.

Trump’s Twitter rants called out rival candidates who he claims have had their chances at securing the border and have failed.

He later issued a statement saying that “the Mexican government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States.” In many cases, he says, they are “criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.”

He says “many fabulous people come in from Mexico and our country is better for it.” He then calls the United States “a dumping ground for Mexico.”
Trump is among more than a dozen Republicans running for president.

Here is a look at some of his tweets on the shooting and immigration.
