SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Local immigrant rights groups are worried that the current debate over sanctuary laws could hurt undocumented workers.
Staff at Centro Legal de la Raza told KRON 4 why their clients are worried.
“Conflating undocumented immigrants with crime is extremely problematic,” immigration lawyer Laura Polstein said. “Our studies show immigrants commit and are arrested for crimes at lower rate than the general population.”
Polstein said sanctuary laws are about protecting crime victims.
She said it is not the job of local agencies to deal with immigration. Instead, it’s about a sense of trust between police, courts and undocumented people.
