Pier 14 Shooting: Mayor Ed Lee sends letter to sheriff asking department to change sanctuary city policy

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The controversy over the shooting death of Kate Steinle on San Francisco’s Pier 14 is not dying down.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is calling on the sheriff to change department policy immediately in the interest of public safety. In a letter Lee sent to sheriff Ross Mirkarimi Tuesday, he said the city’s sanctuary city policy does allow notification.

“Law enforcement may notify federal officials when a particular individual is set for release in certain circumstances,” the letter said.

In March, the sheriff ordered his department not to communicate with federal immigration authorities. The man accused of randomly shooting Steinle was a convicted felon and had been deported five times.

Although immigration authorities wanted him back in custody, the sheriff did not let them know he was going to be freed.
