Girl, 14, who went missing while snorkeling with father confirmed dead

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — A teen girl that went missing off the coast of Narragansett while swimming has died, police confirmed to Eyewitness News.

Maia Stanton Southfield, Mass. was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at South County Hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to Narragansett Police Chief Dean Hoxsie.

According to Hoxsie, crews were in the water for three hours before divers were able to recover the 14-year-old’s body. CPR was performed on Stanton before she was sent to the hospital.

Officials said Stanton was snorkeling and spear fishing with her father in the area of Newton Avenue when she went missing just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

She was found on the rocks, 50 yards from the shoreline after an extensive search in less than two feet of visibility in the ocean.

Police said it appears to be a a tragic accident, and no foul play is suspected.
