Alex Morgan featured on FIFA 16 cover, joins Canadian player as first women chosen

REDWOOD CITY (KRON) — It’s been only days since U.S. national team star Alex Morgan hoisted the women’s World Cup soccer title marking the team’s third championship, most of any country. She’ll now add another historic achievement to her growing list of soccer triumphs.

It was announced Monday that Morgan will grace the cover of EA SPORTS ‘FIFA 16.’ It’s the first time a woman — in this case two — has been chosen to appear on the cover of the popular soccer game.

Morgan will be featured alongside International soccer wizard Lionel Messi of the U.S. cover. “World Cup champion @alexmorgan13 joins #Messi on the historic #FIFA16USCover,” EA tweeted on Monday morning.

“It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA SPORTS FIFA,” said Morgan in an EA SPORTS press release. “I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that ‘FIFA 16’ is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer. And now to share the cover with today’s greatest player is surreal.”

Canadian women’s national team captain Christine Sinclair and Messi will star on the Canadian cover.

This year’s FIFA title makes even more history as it will include 12 women’s national soccer teams, another first for the iconic sports franchise. The other teams include Germany, USA, France, Sweden, England, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Spain, China, Italy, Mexico; the women’s teams will compete only against other women’s teams.

“Having women’s national teams in ‘FIFA 16’ will be great,” Messi says. “Alex and her team have accomplished something amazing for their country and the sport in the USA, and to share the cover with her is an honor.”

EA SPORTS, the Redwood City-based game developer behind the popular soccer title, will release FIFA 16 starting September 22.
