LOS ALTOS (BCN) — Los Altos police released photos Tuesday of people believed to have posed as water utility workers on Monday to gain access to two homes, one of which was burglarized.
Around 1 p.m. Monday, two people posing as water service employees spoke with a resident in the 700 block of Jordan Avenue, police said.
The suspects told the resident that his water supply was possibly contaminated by construction work in the neighborhood, according to police.
The suspects entered the home after they asked permission from the resident to inspect faucets, police said.
The suspects had run water through the faucets, then left the home before the resident discovered the burglary, according to police.
The incident is similar to a report of a suspicious circumstance around 11 a.m. Monday, when residents in the 1000 block of Los Altos Avenue informed police of a person who came to their home claiming to be a water utility worker, police said.
The person told the residents that their water was contaminated and requested to enter the home to inspect faucets, according to police.
The person turned on multiple faucets and left, but did not burglarize the home, police said.
Police released photos obtained through video footage from surveillance systems in the area of the suspects, who they believe are connected with both incidents.
The public is advised to ask utility workers for their credentials and a work order for verification before any work is done, according to police.
Authorized utility employees rarely make abrupt appearances at homes, police said.
