San Mateo police warn of SMPD caller ID impersonation scam

Morgan Hill Police Warn Public about Warrant Scam

SAN MATEO (KRON) — Police are warning of a phone impersonation scam where a caller claims to be a San Mateo police officer using a direct police phone number that would show up on a resident’s caller ID.

Police said a scammer told a 65-year-old San Mateo woman Tuesday afternoon she had a warrant for her arrest, and she needed to pay to not be arrested. The woman did not give the scammer any information and hung up, police said.

Police said they never ask for payments by phone.

If you receive the call, police are urging you to hang up immediately and contact police.
