Despite more fires, total acres burned in California dropped dramatically

MORGAN HILL (KRON) — We are in the middle of what is already a very nasty fire season, and the drought is getting much of the blame.

Even before the Berryessa and Highway 50 fires erupted this week, Calfire said there were 1,200 more fires than usual in a normal year. The 3,625 fires through July18 represent a 28 percent increase over last year.

But surprisingly, the total acreage burned has dropped dramatically.

That is because until, now, most of the fires have been smaller and put out more quickly.

KRON 4’s Rob Fladeboe crunched the numbers.
