Hayward (KRON) — Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley announced today her office has formally filed murder charges against Mark Anthony Estrada, 21, for the July 22 killing of Hayward Police Department Sergeant Scott Lunger.
A 21-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a Hayward police sergeant during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning has been booked into
Alameda County Jail and is tentatively scheduled for arraignment Friday, according to jail records.
Estrada, an Oakland resident, was booked on suspicion of murder shortly before 9 p.m. today into Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled for arraignment at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hayward Hall of Justice, according to jail records.
Estrada is accused of killing Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger, 48, during a traffic stop near Myrtle and Lion streets around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday.
The other officer returned fire at the truck but Estrada managed to flee, according to police.Estrada allegedly abandoned his truck in East Oakland and ended up at Highland Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds. Lunger was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Hayward police today said they are asking for the public’s help in identifying a light-colored, four-door sedan with chrome rims seen near Estrada’s home in East Oakland early Wednesday morning after the shooting.
Hayward police also said today that the funeral service for Lunger is scheduled for next Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Neighborhood Church at 20600 John Drive in Castro Valley.
