Man charged with murdering friend after argument in car on I-880 in San Leandro identified

SAN LEANDRO (BCN) — A man who allegedly shot a friend to death from the backseat of his car on Interstate Highway 880 in San Leandro early Saturday morning was charged with murder Wednesday, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Alfredo Rivera, 45, of Oakland is accused of shooting 37-year-old Miguel Corrales-Rosales of Berkeley in the back at about 2 a.m. Saturday. The two got into an argument while driving through San Leandro returning from a club, according to San Leandro police Detective Michael Benz.

Corrales-Rosales was driving the car, Rivera was in the back seat and a third man was in the front passenger seat. As they drove north on I-880, Corrales-Rosales and Rivera got into an argument and Corrales-Rosales stopped the car near the Marina Boulevard overpass.

Corrales-Rosales pulled out a gun and threatened Rivera. They fought over the gun and Rivera ended up with it, shooting Corrales-Rosales four times, twice in the back, Benz wrote in court documents.

Rivera got out of the car and told the other passenger to leave with him, but he refused. Rivera fled west on Marina Boulevard, throwing the gun into nearby bushes, according to Benz.

California Highway Patrol officers and San Leandro police were already in the area investigating an earlier multi-vehicle crash and heard the gunshots. They found the Corrales-Rosales dead in the car.

The other passenger in the car told investigators what happened, and they obtained a warrant for Rivera’s arrest. He turned himself in to the Oakland CHP office on Monday afternoon, according to Benz.

Rivera was scheduled to appear in court this afternoon for arraignment. He is being held in Santa Rita Jail without bail, according to jail records.
