Sureno gang member gets 22 years in prison for shooting at teens in Santa Rosa park

SANTA ROSA (BCN) — A Sureno gang member was sentenced to 22 years in prison for shooting a rival gang member at a Santa Rosa park last year.

Edgar Rodriguez Alonzo, 26, of Santa Rosa, challenged two 17-year-old Norteno gang members in Martin Luther King Jr. Park near the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on Feb. 11, 2014, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office said.

When the two teens ignored the challenge, Alonzo told them he would show them how his gang handles challenges, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Alonzo returned in a vehicle and shot at the two teens, hitting one of them twice and fled. The wounded teen had surgery at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to remove a bullet, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Alonzo pleaded no contest to the assaults with a firearm and enhancements alleging gang membership, use of a gun and causing great bodily injury.
