Report: Renters in San Francisco spending nearly half of income on rent

Chinese New Year 2013 - San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Rent in San Francisco is eating up about half of renters’ paychecks, according to a report from Zillow.

The analysis found the average renter is paying nearly 47 percent of his or her monthly income on rent in the second quarter of 2015. Before the real estate bubble and bust, renters spent about 30 percent on rent, the report said.

The San Francisco housing market ranks second among large metro areas, after Los Angeles, for the worst rental affordability.

In San Jose, renters are spending about 42 percent of their paychecks on rent in the second quarter of 2015.
