Hayward fire leaves six people homeless

HAYWARD — (KRON/BCN) A 1-year-old baby and five adults were displaced when a bedroom of their Hayward home caught fire Monday, a fire captain said.

The blaze was reported around 1 p.m. at 847 Bishop Avenue, near Schafer Park Elementary school, according to Hayward Fire Capt. Don Nichelson .

Firefighters needed less than five minutes to put the fire out in the bedroom. They had to cut a hole in the roof.

The home sustained $40,000 in damages including moderate smoke damage, Nichelson said. This currently leaves the six residents homeless. They are contacting family and are determining if they need assistance from the American Red Cross, according to Nichelson.

Investigators continue to attempt to find out the cause of the fire, but it appears that it could have been electrical, Nichelson said.
