Surfer uninjured after shark bites her board off California

MORRO BAY, Calif. (AP) – A surfer has escaped injury after a great white shark bit her board off California’s central coast.

Elinor Dempsey said she was surfing at Morro Strand State Beach, just north of Morro Bay, Saturday morning when a shark swam up to her board and chomped on it, leaving a nearly 14-inch bite mark.

Dempsey told the San Luis Obispo Tribune she yelled and immediately swam to shore. Other surfers who saw the attack warned everyone else to get out of the water.

The beach’s supervising ranger, Lisa Remington, said the beach will be closed for 72 hours and warning signs have been posted at nearby beaches.

Experts will examine the bite mark to determine the size of the shark.
