Richmond shooting leaves a 65-year-old man dead

RICHMOND (KRON) —  A 65-year-old mans life was claimed due to gunshots in Richmond’s Pullman neighborhood early Monday morning.

Hercules resident Carl Roy Roberts died at the intersection of South 35th Street and Ohio Avenue, according to Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill and the Contra Costa County coroner’s office.

Officers responded around 2 a.m. to a report of a shooting and found Roberts lying on the curb suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso, Hill said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to first responders.

As of this Monday morning, Hill said detectives were still looking for suspects and a motive for the shooting.

The homicide is the most recent in a spate of shootings in the neighborhood over the past two months.

On July 15, officers responded to the Pullman Point Apartments at Carlson Boulevard and Pullman Avenue and found evidence of gunfire.

A short time later, three men arrived at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Richmond with gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening.

Less than a month later, on Aug. 12, officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 100 block of 33rd Street and found a young teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.

The youth told police he was riding his scooter in the area when a white Cadillac drove by and someone inside started shooting in his direction.

The boy was struck once and was expected to survive his wound. Officers found several bullet shell casings in the area, Hill said.

Although Richmond has seen a dramatic decrease in homicides over the past several years, Monday morning’s fatal shooting marks the 13th homicide in the city so far this year, Hill said. That’s up from 11 homicides in Richmond in all of 2014.

Authorities are asking witnesses to contact the Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill (510) 619-6456
