Union City woman plunges down Big Sur cliff, drowns in ocean

MONTEREY (KRON) — Officials in Big Sur say a woman died Friday after falling down a seaside cliff and plunging into the ocean during a hike, officials said.

Medina Faraz, 20, of Union City, fell off a trail at McWay Falls, near Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park around 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to a report by KSBW-TV.

She was climbing down a cliff without the proper equipment or clothing when she slipped and fell into the ocean, according to Monterey County Search and Rescue.

Omar Mehdavi, a friend and classmate of Faraz, said that she was on her way to becoming a nurse, and “her straight A’s proved that.”

She was the perfect example of a perfect daughter, helping her family pay bills and all while being a full time student. She was also a great friend and we all looked up to her for advice.

Faraz’s body was recovered and a preliminary cause of death is drowning, according to KSBW. A Monterey County coroner investigation is pending.

Faraz leaves behind her mother, father and 3 younger sisters, according to the GoFundMe post.
