Police confirm identity of body found on Angel Island

Police confirm the body they found off Angel Island is that of Wouter Van Lier.




An investigation is underway to determine if a body found on Angel Island Tuesday morning is that of a San Francisco man who went missing overnight.

Wouter Van Lier, 42, was last seen by his wife at 1 a.m. Monday on their boat that was moored in Ayala Cove. when she woke up at 6 a.m. he was gone, police spokeswoman Laurie Nilsen said.

Teams from from Marin, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team and two search dogs resumed their search and rescue efforts Tuesday morning at about 8:30, according to officials.

“Today we’ll get to the more inaccessible areas of the island and there will be a larger water search area,” Nilsen said.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit and a Marin County Sheriff’s Office patrol boat also are searching for Van Lier.

Van Lier is described as a white man with brown hair and blue eyes who is 6 feet tall and weights 190 pounds.

Officials would not comment further on details of their search or the body that was discovered.
