FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A Fresno man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for beating an 82-year-old Sikh man outside a Fresno temple in May 2013.
The Fresno Bee reports 31-year-old Gilbert Garcia Jr., who admitted the act was a hate crime, was sentenced Tuesday.
Police said Garcia had attacked Piara Singh with a steel rod outside the Nanaksar Sikh Temple. Singh was hospitalized with head wounds, broken ribs and lung lacerations.
Following the attack, Garcia was jailed and then placed in a state hospital where he was required to take anti-psychotic medication until his competency was determined to be restored.
Garcia’s prison sentence has brought relief to the Sikh community. Civil rights groups say Sikh men are sometimes mistaken for Muslims and targeted in bias-motivated attacks.
