Tech Report: Apple iOS 9 operating system out for iPhones, iPads

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The next free operating system update for iPhones and iPads is now out and available for download.

Tech Reporter Gabe Slate says iOS 9 brings a ton of cool and useful new features to iDevices.

In iOS 9, there is a new way to search. You swipe to the right on your home screen and that brings up the new search assistant.

It’s like a quick shortcut command center for your iDevice. You can search across your entire phone and apps.

And a page shows you your most-used apps, most-used contacts, what kind food, shops, or fun is nearby. And it shows local news going on near you that might affect you.

In the camera roll, there is a new edition — a selfie album. Your phone will try to identify selfies and put them in an album. Basically, it finds any picture you took with the front-facing camera that has a face near the screen.

Apple Maps is improved in iOS 9 too. It adds public transit directions to help you get around by buss or trains.

The “notes” app has new tools too. Beyond just jotting down quick ideas, you can also add photos, either by taking a picture with the iOS camera, or from the camera roll, or drawing into the note itself.

iOS 9 brings some special exclusive changes to the iPad, like the ability to multi-task. You can have two apps open at once in a split-screen view and easily work with both at the same time.

And Gabe’s favorite new feature in iOS 9 has got to be with the iPad. You can do picture in picture.

If you’re playing a video, you can open an app and that video will shrink to a smaller floating window that you can move around.. And it keeps playing.

You can also do this with FaceTime video chats, so you can see and talk to someone and get work done at the same time. Or you can be playing a game without them knowing (don’t tell your parents).

And lastly, if it’s true, the most important improvement in iOS 9 could be a better battery life.

Apple claims iOS 9 will add one hour of battery life to your daily activities. Apps and key technologies have been made more efficient to trim battery usage wherever possible, and there is a new low power mode that will help.
