GARDEN VALLEY (KRON) — Investigators on Wednesday announced they suspect homicide and arson after three bodies were found in a burned Garden Valley residence that belonged to a missing Bay Area family.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said that the coroner confirmed the remains of two people that were located inside the burned residence, and are currently investigating the discovery of a possible third victim.
“A possible third set of remains were located within the burnt residence, however, are still in the early stage of being examined,” said the sheriff’s office.
The identification of the remains have yet to be determined.
Adam Buchanan, Molly McAfee (Buchanan’s partner), and their son Gavin, disappeared after a 10-acre fire destroyed their cabin, located on the 4600 block of Highway 193 in Garden Valley, on Sept. 13. The family is from Benicia, according to authorities.
Adam is the president of Buchanan construction, whose offices are in Benicia not far from the family home. According to neighbors in the business complex, El Dorado Sheriff’s Office investigators thoroughly searched this office last week.
Sheriff’s investigators interviewed immediate family members in the days after the fire mainly to ask questions about the cabin, Gizzi said.
In the following days, they returned with a search warrant and searched the family’s home and Buchanan’s real estate and construction business, seizing one of their vehicles.
So far they have not shared any suspicions with the family, a fact that Gizzi called “very frustrating.”
“We have a family that potentially has lost three of its members and it’s very frustrating,” Gizzi said. “We’re hoping for some resolution and closure.”
