WALNUT CREEK (KRON) — Parents and members of a youth swim team in Walnut Creek were sad to find out that a popular club will be closing.
And the team will likely have to disband because of that fact. Parents and the coaching staff are worried about the Club Sport Valley Vista closing down.
Trophies line the walls at the Club Sport Valley Vista, signifying years of accomplishment. The Barracuda swim team is the most important thing in so many young people’s lives.
Keith Rajecki is the club’s vice president, and he said shutting the place down is bad.
“We’ve got about 190 swimmers on the Valley Vista swim team, ranging in age from 3 years to 18 years old,” Rajecki said. “The reaction has been pretty harsh. We’ve had kids crying, asking their parents about what they are going to do for a swim team.”
The speculation is the owners plan on selling the property for development. It is prime real estate, but members said they would rather the club stay open for the greater good.
Jim Hausman is a member. He lives next door to the club, and his daughter, Cloe, has been on the swim team since she was 3 years old.
“She has developed a couple of really good friends there, who she doesn’t go to school with, and a couple of her very best friends are members of the swim team,” Hausman said. “She’s learned a good skill of swimming. It’s pretty important for kids to know how to swim, and it’s just a great team. The coaches are great, and they develop the sportsmanship and comradery that is really special. Now, it’s closing, and who knows what’s going to happen to the team?”
The club is set to close its doors for good on Jan. 31.
