Audubon sanctuary in Tiburon closes to protect migratory birds

TIBURON (BCN) — The Richardson Bay Audubon Sanctuary in Tiburon is closed to all boat traffic until April 1 because of it’s importance to migrating birds, according to sanctuary officials.

The sanctuary at 376 Greenwood Beach Road closed Oct. 1, according to sanctuary officials.

All boats including kayaks and paddleboards are not allowed on the sanctuary because ducks, geese and shorebirds use it to either re-fuel as they head south or as a winter home, sanctuary officials said.

Even a person paddling a kayak can flush the birds, according to sanctuary officials.

The sanctuary extends from the Cove housing complex to Strawberry Point, east to Belvedere and north to Blackie’s Pasture, the officials said.

Signs on buoys and pilings mark the closed areas, according to sanctuary officials.
