UPDATE TUESDAY, 10:35 P.M. CHP Oakland determined that 460 feet of fencing fell off the 23rd Avenue overpass.
The debris from the fallen fence struck 10 cars causing a multi-vehicle collision.
One of those vehicles did catch on fire but the driver escaped without injuries. The people in the 10 other cars were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries.
It is unknown why the fencing fell but CHP is currently investigating the cause of the incident.
UPDATE 10:30 P.M. .: All lanes have reopened.
UPDATE 8:08 P.M.: The incident was reported at 6:34 p.m. on southbound Highway 880 at 23rd Avenue when a sedan, a pickup truck and a third vehicle crashed and then pulled over to the shoulder.
Two people were transported to a hospital with minor injuries, and one of the cars caught fire, according to the CHP.
Initial reports indicated that chain link fencing and some other unidentified debris fell from the 23rd Avenue overpass. One report even claimed that the overpass had collapsed – although CHP officers said they do not believe that to be the case.
At this time it’s not entirely clear how the debris appeared in the roadway, and personnel on the scene are investigating. The overpass itself has also been shut down, according to the CHP.
A Sig-alert was issued for both directions of the highway at 6:44 p.m. All southbound lanes had reopened as of 7:45 p.m., and one northbound lane reopened shortly after that.
According to the CHP, traffic is backed up all the way to the 980 and will likely remain slow for at least two hours. If the overpass has sustained some kind of significant damage, however, it could take much longer.
Commuters are advised to use Interstate Highway 580 as an alternate route, officers said. Commercial trucks, which are not typically permitted on that stretch of highway, are being temporarily allowed to use the detour in light of congestion on Highway 880.
All southbound lanes have reopened. The No. 1 lane northbound has reopened as well.
UPDATE 7:43 P.M.: One lane has reopened southbound. CHP has confirmed there were a multi-vehicle collision and a vehicle fire near the fencing that fell.
