SFO bound flight returns to LAX after fight between passengers

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A Southwest Airlines flight heading to San Francisco International Airport returned to Los Angeles International Airport after a fight between two passengers broke out Sunday night, according to a Southwest spokeswoman.

The pilot in command of a Southwest jetliner was forced to return the plane to LAX to allow police access to the cabin because of a rapidly escalating situation involving passengers who were not traveling well together, said the spokeswoman.

The spokeswoman said that the return was initiated after a “rapidly escalating” physical altercation broke out between one passenger against another.

The captain declared an emergency to receive priority handling from air traffic controllers, then landed the plane and reached a gate where law enforcement officers could met the flight.

The remaining 136 San Francisco-bound passengers switched aircraft and will arrive about five hours behind the scheduled arrival time.

Some passengers took to twitter to express their frustration.

Southwest Airlines and the FBI are investigating the situation further.
