MONTEREY (KRON) — Vandals beheaded a statue of Saint Junipero Serra at a historic park in Monterey, police said.
This comes just weeks after vandals hit another Serra statue at the Carmel mission. On Thursday morning, the statue was found decapitated. Presidio and Monterey police have teamed up to find the vandals.
Right now, they believe the head was broken off with a strong object. Serra has been targeted by some Native American groups, criticizing his treatment of their ancestors.
One historian said the statue is an important public art piece, and there is hope it can be fixed.
