WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — School officials say one student is dead and another wounded after a shooting at Winston-Salem State University.
The university said Sunday a suspected gunman is on the loose and visitors to the campus should stay away.
University spokesman Aaron Singleton says the slaying victim was 19-year-old Anthony White Jr., a second-year student from Charlotte.
White’s mother says he was studying information technology. Xavier Martin of Charlotte told The Associated Press that she doesn’t know what led to the shooting.
Police said a second student hit by gunfire received hospital treatment but was released early Sunday. His name and condition were being withheld.
The shooting was reported around 1:20 a.m. Sunday near some dormitories. The campus was locked down for about three hours.
Singleton says police have a suspect, but wouldn’t provide other information.
