SUNNYVALE (BCN) — Three officers who fatally shot a man allegedly armed with a knife at a Sunnyvale apartment last week have more than 20 years of combined experience in law enforcement, a department of public safety spokesman said today.
They were identified as Lt. Daniel Pistor, who has 18 years of experience; Officers Sean Mula, with a year and a half of experience and Barron Renzi, who has a little over a year working in law enforcement, public safety Capt. Jeff Hunter said.
The trio fired at 42-year-old Moises Nerio, who allegedly charged at them with a knife at an apartment in the 1200 block of Ayala Drive on Nov. 12, according to Hunter.
The trio responded to the residence at around 12:15 p.m. after Nerio’s half sister reported a sexual assault that just happened at the home she shared with the 42-year-old, Hunter said.
The officers shot Nerio within close range and were not injured, the spokesman said.
Nerio was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hunter said.
The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is routine protocol in an officer-involved shooting, according to Hunter.
The department and Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation into the case.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the department at (408) 444-7091.
