At least one dead after vehicle going wrong way on Hwy 101 in San Rafael hits big rig

SAN RAFAEL (KRON) — At least one person had died following a late night collision Monday on U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael.

A vehicle was going the wrong way in the highway’s southbound lanes, just north of Central San Rafael exit around 11:20 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle then collided with a gasoline tanker truck, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhard said. The big rig was empty at the time of the accident.

A person in one of the vehicles lost consciousness and became trapped inside, according to CHP officials.

At 11:33 p.m., the CHP issued a Sig-alert, blocking three of the highway’s southbound lanes, as CHP officials investigated the incident. All lanes of Hwy 101 are now open. sansafael

The driver suffered fatal injuries.

The truck driver was not injured, according to a witness.

Police are investigating if drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.
