Advisory posted due to bacteria at Monterey Municipal Beach

MONTEREY (BCN) — County health officials said swimmers are being warned to stay out of the water because the higher levels of bacteria have been associated with the increased potential risk of illness.

Monterey Municipal Beach has been posted with an advisory because of high indicator bacteria found in water samples taken Monday, Monterey
County health officials said Tuesday.

The sources of the bacteria range from marine life, other animals, rainfall runoff, storm drains and human activity, county health officials said.

Rainfall is associated with increased bacterial levels because of runoff, particularly in the area of man-made and natural storm drains such as culverts, streams and rivers, according to the county.

The advisory will remain in effect until indicator bacteria are at a safe level for recreational water contact.
