(BCN) – The driver of a Cadillac sedan died Saturday morning in Hayward when he left his vehicle and was struck by several others, California Highway Patrol officials said.
CHP officers responded at about 1:30 a.m. to a collision on southbound Interstate Highway 880 near Paseo Grande, CHP officials said.
CHP officers reported that it appeared the Cadillac was traveling north on I-880 when it hit the back of a passenger van, according to CHP officials.
The van kept going until it became disabled just south of Interstate Highway 238 and the passengers left it before several vehicles
struck it, CHP officials said.
The Cadillac stopped near Paseo Grande and officers believe the driver got out, jumped a Jersey barrier and tried to run across the
southbound lanes, according to CHP officials.
Several vehicles hit him and paramedics pronounced him dead at the collision site, CHP officials said.
Five of six southbound lanes of I-880 were closed for about two hours and 20 minutes because of the fatality, according to CHP officials.
The collision involving the van forced officers to have northbound traffic exit at Hesperian Boulevard for about an hour as they conducted an investigation, CHP officials said.
